God Scatters the Proud

Genesis 11: 1-9 contains the detail of the origins of the city of "Babel" or Babylon on the plains of Shinar. To this point in human history everyone spoke the same language. The arrogance that developed in this settlement is summarized in verse 4, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves."

God quickly took note of the situation and realized that what they were building was an affront to His Glory and would elevate their plans and accomplishments over and above His sovereign rule. Verse 8, "So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city."

God always finds a way to "scatter" the proud and arrogant. So as we see the attempts of those even in our government who are desperately trying to "build something to make a name for themselves" we can take confidence in the fact that God sees and God will, in His time, "scatter them and thwart their efforts".

And don't forget, God is building a city of His own. It is a city that has "solid foundations" Hebrews 11:10.
