12/01/2024 - Transitions: Elijah to Elisha, a Multiplication of Miracles.
Join me for my Sunday Message, a continuation of the series Transitions. This Week, "Elijah to Elisha, a Multiplication of Miracles."
Thus far we have examined two other cases of Leadership Succession in the older Testament. Moses was called by God to get the people OUT of Egypt, but his it would be his deputy, Joshua who would lead them into the promised land. It was in the heart of David to BUILD a house for the Ark of the Covenant of God. However, God interrupted David’s plan with a plan of His own. Solomon, David ‘s son would build the Temple using David’s location, plans, materials and resources.
Today we turn to yet another succession plan in the time of the prophets of Israel and Judah. Elijah was a powerful spokesman for God sent to declare truth to a rebellious Israel and confront their wicked King, Ahab. And yet, the message of God revealed to him at Horeb as he was on the run from the threat of Jezebel included the call to anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed him as prophet in Israel. This action was not intended to complete his work but to continue the work of God.
The lessons here are obvious: no one in the Kingdom of God is indispensable. God is never without options. And the request of Elisha to receive a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit would manifest itself in the number of miracles attributed to him being twice that of Elijah, even if the last one would wait until after his death!
